Yes, you can import a GEDCOM with the "Add Data" option selected. It will be added as a separate branch.

I would then link the two of you via marriage and add a child (real or virtual) to use as the tree root. This will allow you to benefit from all premium tree comparison features. Of course, if you decide to update the GEDCOM, you'll have to repeat the process.
