How do French professions of "hardier" and "mercenaire" translate into English?

I want to ask if anyone knows what a “hardier” is in English. It's from a Moselle, France, death entry, and I’ve had no luck searching the Internet.

I think it might be some kind of military position as the individual being researched has also been described as “mercenaire” which can translate as a mercenary or soldier - is this correct?

Thank you.

A "mercenaire" is a "mercenary".

In a old French dictionary, I can find that a "hardier" was a "shepherd". Does it fit to what you know about your ancestor?

You are spot on! Particularly as regards "hardier" - this ancestor's father was a "pâtre" or shepherd also. Thank you.

Sorry to be so slow in reply.
