Not all families have coats of arms, to give them the right appellation. Crests are what is on top of the coat of arms and these are reserved for what were noble families, or gentry families in England. Your best bet is to find an on-line armorial, such as Haag, and see if any of these families had coats of arms. Not all families with the same name have a coat of arms, it depends if these families achieved some local eminence or not. Many upper bourgeoisie (loosely, upper middle class families) on the continent had coats of arms - when they ahcieved national importance they were granted a crest. On the other hand Swiss families always had some form of visual recognition, like a coat of arms: Schmidt, for instance, had an anvil (Blacksmith) as a coat of arms - it was symbol of recognition that was used and was essentially generic and had no national importance whatever, but made pretty.
